New Towns (2023)
This commission of New Towns was created for Stylist and Model Shawn Lakin, in celebration of her wedding in Summer 2023. Made-up of over one hundred found doilies and antique lace, this piece was carefully patch-worked into a custom fitting garment.
This project was a reinterpretation of ‘New Towns’. A body of work exploring the domestic dysfunction that followed the 1946 New Towns act, which saw neglected communities relocated into new, yet poorly developed towns across the UK. In conversation with the iconic writings of Rosika Parker in The Subversive Stitch, I too hoped to subvert the experiences of the women in this narrative and the ignorance of the architecture they had been placed within. Here the doily becomes a badge of honour, in celebration of their labour and resistance.
The project received press in British and American Vogue, which can be found here.
